The Friends of Chalfont St Giles Library was formed in 1999 following concerns over the future of the County-run library. The County Library was eventually closed in November 2006 against the wishes of the village. The Friends re-opened the library as a local community-run public library in January 2007. Following a period where the County provided a mobile library service, the County agreed in 2010 to work in partnership with the Community Library. The mobile library was redeployed.
The Friends of the Library are the supporting membership of the Community Library which is a charity. By paying £10 or more as an annual subscription/donation, village residents show their support for the library. The money raised helps ensure that the library provides the best possible stock selection for both adults and children and also helps fund library improvements. In recent years these have included new mobile shelving, new lighting, a new reception desk, new childrens kinderboxes, new noticeboards, improved information displays, a new carpet and redecoration.
The Friends are an integral part of the Community Library since the library is run entirely by volunteers from the village. Volunteers also organise regular and holiday events for young children and support the Summer Reading Challenge for children. Most volunteers are also library Friends.
The Friends have an active Literary Group who organise author talks and occasional outings. All are welcome to these events. Any surplus arising from these events is available to support the library.
To join the Friends of the Library please complete the subscription form (here) and post or hand in to the library. Subscription forms and bank standing order mandates are available in the Library.
